PLANT CITY - Live music, folk dancing, Latin food, carnival rides and bingo, coupled with ideal weather, are helping draw Tampa Bay area residents to the three-day Our Lady of Guadalupe Festival at Plant City Stadium.
Activities resume at noon today and continue until 10 p.m.
The festival honors Our Lady of Guadalupe, a 16{+t}{+h} century Roman Catholic Mexican icon depicting an apparition of the Virgin Mary, sometimes known as the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Festivities began at noon Friday with a bilingual program by two priests, Tom Anastasia and Carlos Rojas, from the sponsoring St. Clement Catholic Church, preceded by the flags of Latin American countries paraded into the stadium.
Hispanics make up a sizable portion of the St. Clement congregation, one of Plant City's largest churches. St. Clement has sponsored Our Lady of Guadalupe festivals in the past, but this is the first time it has been held at the stadium, 1904 S. Park Road, south of Interstate 4.
Also at the stadium, an overnight vigil will be held from 6 p.m. Tuesday until the 5 a.m. Wednesday Mass, with a 4 a.m. serenade with mariachi.
