The other day I watched a religious speech by Mitt Romney, candidate for president. He mentioned God so many times I lost count. He also credited God for giving us liberty, freedom and winning the Revolutionary War. As far as I know the good citizens and soldiers gave us all that. And government is derived from the governed, not God. He would like to see more religious icons in the public square. He actually spat out the word secular as if it were a disease. For this speech he got a huge ovation.
He said one truism - that our forward-thinking, progressive cousins in Europe are relying less and less on religion. No applause.
He never mentioned that almost all the wars in the world were and are still fought over religion, causing untold violence, suffering and death. Even here people are violent in defense of their religion.
