TAMPA - University of South Florida freshman Dominique Jones has been named the Sporting News National Player of the Week as well as the Big East Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week it was announced today.
Jones averaged 27.5 points, 10 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals in wins against Richmond (79-65) and UAB (68-58). He is the first Big East rookie to garner back-to-back honors since Da'Sean Butler of West Virginia did it Feb. 5 and 12 of last season.
Jones became the first freshman in USF history, and only the third Bulls player ever, to score 30 or more points in back-to-back games. He was also the first Big East freshman in 13 years to score 30 or more points in consecutive games. The last Big East freshman to accomplish it was Georgetown's Allen Iverson in December of 1994.
