After Plant's 2-0 victory against Hillsborough gave the team its eighth win of the season and continued the Panthers' season without allowing a goal, the team's captain and only senior, Chelsea Hearne, looked back on the rivalry between the Panthers and Terriers in recent years. The win was Plant's second against Hillsborough this season, something Hearne said was more than she could ask for as the team's only senior.
"This rivalry between Plant and Hillsborough has been going on for like seven years and I'm the last of a generation that knows about it," Hearne said. "I told the girls they don't have to get me a senior gift with two wins against Hillsborough and zero goals scored - I can't ask for anything else."
HAPPY WITH REBOUND: Bloomingdale coach Sue Peet said the Bulls didn't play the game she expected in its 4-0 loss at home to district opponent Freedom on Nov. 29, but she said the team was prepared for its next game - a 1-0 win against Newsome.
"They came out ready to play against Newsome," Peet said. "Newsome had a lot of control in the game but we played with a lot of fight."
PLAYERS' RETURN LEADS TO WINS: Seffner Christian's program, in its second season, started off with a rocky 2-6-1 record. But according to Coach Frank Lopez, with the return of injured forward Bianca Lopez and midfielder Nikki Schwind, along with the team "coming together," the Crusaders are currently on a four-game winning streak.
Lopez said he is looking forward to the next few games when Seffner Christian will play Lakeland Christian and Cambridge for a second time with a more confident team.
"We've played a lot of these teams in early games," Lopez said. "But I feel that over the last couple of weeks the team is really starting to get what we are trying to do here."
6A BOYS SEEDING SET: In Class 6A-District 7, Alonso and Gaither already have claimed the top two seeds as the district slate of their schedule ended last week.
Alonso (8-2-3, 3-1-1) has the top seed in the district tournament next month, by virtue of its defeat of Gaither (10-1-2, 3-1-1) last month.
Both will receive first-round tournament byes, however. Gaither will face the St. Petersburg-Sickles winner, while Alonso will face the Mitchell-Countryside winner.
SCORELESS STREAK ENDS: Jesuit defeated Robinson 5-1 on Tuesday night. The Tigers have finished their 5A-10 schedule, allowing only one goal in district play.
After the win, the Tigers (12-1) have outscored their opponents 48-1 in district play.
Previously, the Tigers last allowed a goal Nov. 10 against Berkeley Prep, a 4-2 victory.
