SEFFNER - Design work is under way for waterlines that will provide a safe drinking water source for residents on rural Buster Bean Drive.
Five years ago, Seffner activist Cam Oberting went to the county pleading for waterlines in an area where private wells for seven homes have tested positive over the years for mercury and other pollutants. The Hillsborough County solid waste department is designing the lines, which will cost about $175,000 to bury and connect to the homes.
Buster Bean is close to the Taylor Road landfill, but solid waste officials don't think a plume of contamination under the dump is spreading to the wells. The state is not trying to determine the source of the well contamination.
Dave Adams, an environmental manager for the solid waste department, said he hopes the county will install more waterlines in the area because the soil in Seffner is very porous, allowing contaminants to reach the underground aquifer faster.
