More than a dozen family members and friends comforted one another this afternoon in the pediatric emergency ward at Tampa General Hospital as they waited for word on the condition of a 10-year-old Valrico girl bitten on the face by a dog.
Angela Davis received what deputies called "serious" wounds. By late afternoon, she had been upgraded to fair condition, according to hospital spokeswoman Ellen Fiss. The family has declined to comment.
Deputies and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue were called to 1101 Southside Drive in Brandon at 1 p.m.
The girl was visiting the Brandon home and was playing in the backyard with other children and two mixed breed dogs, Duke and Buc, officials said.
For unknown reasons, the dogs pinned the child down to the ground and one of them bit her face, deputies said.
The dog that bit her belongs to the homeowner, Shawny Duncan, officials said.
An hour after the incident, Hillsborough County Animal Services took custody of the two dogs from the backyard.
In the mean time, Duncan, who is pregnant, started experiencing medical problems and was rushed to Brandon Community Hospital. Her condition is unknown at this time.
