Regarding "Lead Fears Dampen Holiday Cheer" (front page, Dec. 9):
The specter of this mostly media-manufactured crisis of lead paint and the resulting lack of toys for poor children would be comical if not tragic. We are so deep in it now; however, there may be no escape from the psychosis. No action figures for Tiny Tim this year.
I remember in high school peeling lead paint off the walls of classrooms for fun. The base of the paints I used for my models were lead, making everything shinier. It is a wonder that all of those people in the obituary section are leaving us in their 70s, 80s and 90s.
But we must "protect the children" from everything bad. But almost everything is potentially bad and awaiting a media campaign against it. Maybe, as a preemptive strike, the best answer is to not let kids do anything, ever.
But wait, that would be a crime, too. I recommend getting a life and moving on.
