The Just Sing, Florida contest has picked three finalists in its quest for a new state song. You can go to www.justsingflorida.org to hear for yourself, then pick your favorite. Voting ends Jan. 11. Can't decide? The Tampa Tribune's Curtis Ross offers his quick take on each of the contenders here.
'Florida, My Home'
Sample lyrics: From the quaint and tropic islands/Bordered by the sapphire sea/'Cross the 'Glades and through the orange groves/Softest breezes stir the trees.
Curtis Ross says: Perfect, if your idea of Florida resembles a Victorian church service. May not make you want to salute. Might make you want to repent.
'Florida - Where the Sawgrass Meets the Sky'
Sample lyrics: Florida, where the sawgrass meets the sky/Florida, where our hearts will ever lie/Sitting proud in the ocean like a sentinel true/Always shielding your own, yet giving welcome.
Curtis Ross says: This entry takes an easy-listening approach with lyrics celebrating that tiny part of the state that's not been paved over yet. The bridge is a dead ringer for The Carpenters.
'My Florida Home'
Sample lyrics: Home my Florida home/Wherever I wander you shine in my mind/Here's where I grow, here's where I thrive/Under the bluest southern skies/Home my Florida home.
Curtis Ross says: Sounds suspiciously classical. Should only be sung by professionals under strict supervision.
