CLEARWATER - The North squad took a 10-0 lead and held on for a 17-7 win in the 14th annual Pinellas All-Star Classic football game Wednesday at Clearwater.
Countryside running back Maurice Threatts scored on a 6-yard run late in the first quarter to build the 10-0 advantage.
In the third quarter, after using a strong running attack, the North squad used some razzle-dazzle to put the game out of reach. Countryside running back Brandon Lockwood, after fumbling the ball, recovered and on a halfback option hit Clearwater's Chris Sackman in the far right corner of the end zone for a 17-7 lead.
South wide receiver/return specialist Ja-Vonte Trotter (Boca Ciega) was named the game's most valuable player. He scored the lone touchdown for the South on a 59-yard pass from Pinellas Park's Jesse Redden. Trotter caught the pass along the right sideline and weaved his way through the defense. Other game awards were: defensive MVP Larry Murphy (Gibbs defensive back), offensive MVP Erin Murray (East Lake running back), defensive line Donel Engram (Tarpon Springs) and offensive line Cody Donnely (Palm Harbor University).
Despite being unable to play in the game due to the Packers' playoff run, Largo representatives Brynn Harvey, Leonard Johnson, Reggie McCray and Travis Feldman were honored at halftime.
