Mitchell Finally Puts It Together

Published: December 12, 2007

The Mitchell Mustangs saw the best parts of the team come together Friday night, which led to a 53-38 win at Academy of the Holy Names.

Mitchell trailed 16-6 after the first quarter, then outscored AHN 15-6 in the second.

AHN had only three points in the third quarter and Mitchell outscored the Jaguars 23-13 in the fourth.

AHN was 7-1 going into the game, its only loss against Melbourne Central Catholic.

"We probably played our best game to date," said Mitchell coach Stephanie Koslin, whose team is 6-2.

Last year's meeting between the teams ended a lot differently, with the Mustangs losing decidedly. And even though both teams have changed most of their personnel, the win still meant a lot to the Mustangs who witnessed last year's loss.

"We have a few that remember that game," Koslin said. "And the junior varsity team got beat bad, too. They all wanted it pretty bad and they all played really well. Everybody was in good spirits after the game. They rebounded, they hustled."

The Mustangs have played well sporadically this season, Koslin said, but the AHN game was the first time everybody played that well at the same time.

"I don't know why it happened but I hope we do it all the time," Koslin said. "I'm not going to accept anything less."
Junior C Hanna Bernard led the Mustangs in scoring with 14 points and added four blocks. Koslin said sophomore G Latrel Kirkland also had a strong game.

GAMES TO WATCH: Fans will get to see what happens when a punishing defense meets a high-powered offense as Mitchell travels to Gulf on Monday.

The Mustangs have given up an average of 31 points this season while Gulf, behind freshman G Nicole Adams and senior G Jordan Schulman, have averaged 55 points.

Before that, the Buccaneers host Ridgewood on Thursday. The Rams had won four straight before losing to Wesley Chapel 35-23 on Friday.
