TAMPA - The proposed runway extension and hangar expansion at Peter O. Knight Airport remains grounded at least until February.
Opponents have coaxed the Tampa City Council into taking a closer look at the project. The Davis Islands Civic Association issued a resolution against the project recently.
More than 100 people signed a petition opposing the extension of the 3,405-foot main runway by 175 feet to meet federal requirements. The proposal would bring the runway closer to houses.
Residents also say the new hangars would block water views.
The council agreed to ask the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority to postpone voting on the project until after making a presentation to the city Jan. 17.
Louis Miller, the authority's executive director, said he would comply with the request. The authority already had postponed its vote on the project from November to January to accommodate the civic association's deliberations.
