ORLANDO - Four dead dolphins washed ashore off southeast Volusia County Wednesday.
The dolphins were found by a ranger at the northern end of Canaveral National Seashore. They were removed by the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, based in Orlando.
The institute will test the dolphins to confirm whether toxins from red tide killed them, said Megan Stolen, a research biologist at the institute.
Red tide is common on the Gulf Coast, where large blooms have killed hundreds of dolphins, Stolen said. The algae blooms usually do not make it to the east coast.
"We're bracing for the worst and hoping for the best," she said.
