Hillsborough's McCray Ready To Be A Force

Hillsborough High heavyweight Moses McCray made his return to the wrestling mat last weekend, and if the results were any indication, he's going to be a force this season.

McCray, a Terriers football standout who has verbally committed to Florida State, went 5-0 with five pins in the first period - including one in 11 seconds - at the Raiders Duals in Plant City on Saturday, Coach Mike Patrick said.

"He's excited to be back," Patrick said of McCray.

McCray improved his record to 6-0 on Tuesday with a pin against Plant City's Eddie Rosenbaum, but was scheduled to face his toughest challenge of the season to date Wednesday against Newsome's Connor O'Neil, who went 8-0 last weekend at the NHSCA Sunshine Invitational at Brandon, the only non-Brandon county wrestler to go unbeaten at the tournament.

Patrick believes McCray, who finished sixth in the Class 2A state tournament last season, is good enough to challenge for a state title.

FACA CLASSIC: Six area football players have been selected to play in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association North-South All-Star Classic on Dec. 21 in Lakeland: Plant WR Derek Winter, Middleton RB Carlton Jones, Hillsborough LB Marc Thomas, Tampa Bay Tech DB Jermaine Williams, Tarpon Springs DL Donnel Engram and Ridgewood OL John Karakaris. Tampa Bay Tech coach C.C. Culpepper was selected for the South's coaching staff.

NORTH WINS PINELLAS GAME: The North squad took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and hung on for a 17-7 win in the 14th annual Pinellas All-Star Classic football game Wednesday at Clearwater.

The North's TDs came on a 6-yard run by Countryside RB Maurice Threatts and when Countryside RB Brandon Lockwood recovered his fumble and threw to Clearwater's Chris Sackman on a halfback option.

South WR Ja-Vonta Trotter (Boca Ciega) was named the game's MVP. He scored a TD on a 59-yard pass from Pinellas Park's Jesse Redden. Other awards: defensive MVP Larry Murphy (Gibbs DB), offensive MVP Erin Murray (East Lake RB), defensive line Donnel Engram (Tarpon Springs) and offensive line Cody Donnely (Palm Harbor University).

JEFFERSON WILL HOST BADGERS: Jefferson athletic director Bob Morgan is proud of his school's athletic facility. Apparently, he isn't the only one.

Morgan said Wisconsin chose to use Jefferson's facilities to train in preparation for the team's game against Tennessee in the Outback Bowl. Morgan said the Badgers chose Jefferson over USF.

"I think we have one of the better facilities," said Morgan, who added Iowa practiced at Jefferson in 2004 when it played in the Outback Bowl.

PANTHERS IN NATIONAL RANKINGS: The Plant volleyball team (31-1), which won its second straight 5A state title in November, ended the season ranked No. 26 in the Student Sports Volleyball Final Fab 50 poll.

The Panthers are ranked No. 18 in the latest Century Club National Top 100, and No. 87 in the MaxPreps.com National Poll.
