After not making much noise the past couple of years, the Tampa Bay Tech girls basketball team is rolling.
The Titans, 8-16 a year ago, are off to a 13-0 start and are one of only three undefeated teams in the county.
"My expectations are simple - continue to get better every day, play hard defense and make the easy baskets," TBT coach Heather Glezen said. "If we do these, the rest will fall into place as it should and hopefully we'll be playing deep into the playoffs."
The Titans are led by four-year starter Andrea Bridges, who scored her 1,000th career point last month. The guard averages a team-high 15.6 points and 2.1 steals.
"Andrea had a lot of pressure on her in the past. But she can now sit back and enjoy just playing the game again knowing that she has a team behind her that wants to win as much as she does," Glezen said. "She is playing the best overall basketball that she's ever played."
Forward DeAndra Davis, who transferred from Blake, averages 11.4 points and 6.3 rebounds.
"She is a tremendous athlete with unbelievable jumping ability," Glezen said. "Being just a sophomore, she has a lot to learn and as she better understands the game, I anticipate more consistent numbers from her. She loves the game and with her hunger to please and get better, the sky's the limit."
Other contributors include Courtney Jenkins, JJ Rodriguez, Dae Dae Mann and Re Re Jenrette.
"Our team is like a chain; no one person is more important than the other. Everyone every day has a job to do in order for us to be successful - from the managers, players, coaches, parents and administration," Glezen said. "If any one link along that chain breaks or bends, the other links have to make up the slack."
NEW HOME: The Craig Keeler Memorial Christmas Tournament will no longer be hosted by the Academy of the Holy Names.
Instead, the 16-team event will be hosted by Tampa Catholic, where Nancy Kroll, Keeler's widow, is now coach.
The decision to move the tournament came in the spring when Kroll and AHN athletics director Pete Young couldn't agree on - among other things - the format.
"TC is willing to support the original 16-team format with a champion," Kroll said. "We tried to host the tournament at both gyms, but due to scheduling concerns we could not reach an agreement. We are very grateful to Holy Names for hosting the tournament for the last eight years."
Holy Names will host the eight-team Jaguar Holiday Tournament.
