TAMPA - University of South Florida defensive line coach Dan McCarney was one of two finalists to interview at Northern Illinois on Wednesday, but the school will name Southern Illinois coach Jerry Kill as its head coach today.
While USF was going through preparations Wednesday for the Dec. 31 Sun Bowl, McCarney was in Chicago and the NIU campus in DeKalb, Ill., interviewing with NIU officials and wasn't present at USF's practice.
Before coming to USF in February, McCarney had been a head coach for 12 seasons at Iowa State.
WALK THE WALK: Junior WR Marcus Edwards will graduate Saturday after only 3 1/2 years. Edwards redshirted as a freshman and still has another year of eligibility next season.
"That's one heck of an accomplishment," USF WR coach Mike Canales said. "It sends a great message to our other kids that you can get your degree in four years."
JESUIT'S ALLEN TO TRANSFER FROM LOUISVILLE: Former Jesuit High running back Anthony Allen will transfer from the University of Louisville, his father, Amos Allen, said Wednesday.
Allen has not determined where he will transfer, but Big East rules prohibit him from playing at another Big East school.
As a sophomore this season, Allen rushed for a team-high 696 yards, including a school-record 275 yards against Middle Tennessee State on Sept. 6. He averaged 4.8 yards per carry and had seven TDs.
"It was time for a change," Amos Allen said. "There were new coaches, different schemes, and Anthony likes a running scheme where they use big backs and do a lot of running."
