8 County Players Make All-State Team

Five Bayshore Christian players and three Tampa Prep players were selected to the Florida Sports Writers Association Class 1A and 2A All-State volleyball teams Thursday.

The Faith Warriors, winners of the Class 1A state championship, had two players make the first team - senior outside hitter Jannica Mollett, who was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 1A Player of the Year, and senior setter Ashlea Ballengee. Mollett, also selected to The Tampa Tribune's 2007 All-Hillsborough County first team, finished the season with 413 kills, 341 digs and 39 blocks. Ballengee, selected to the Tribune's All-County second team, led the county with 848 assists.

Junior outside hitter Sami Stokes and freshman middle hitter Gabrielle Fernandez were selected to the all-state second team. Junior libero Sara Lucia was selected to the third team.

Tampa Prep junior outside hitter Alena Ransom, who helped the Terrapins to the 2A elite eight, was named to the 2A all-state third team. Ransom, who finished the season with 224 kills, also was selected to the Tribune's All-County second team. Senior outside hitter Alisa French and junior middle hitter Dana Malinowski were named all-state honorable mention. Malinowski also was selected to the Tribune's All-County second team.

Classes 3A through 6A will be released throughout the week.

TIGERS TOURNEY: Jesuit will host an eight-team baseball tournament featuring five out-of-state teams during the school's Easter break.

The tournament, scheduled for March 24-27, will welcome Fordham Prep (New York), Regis (New York), Rockhurst (St. Louis), Seattle Prep, Regis (Aurora, Colo.) and Gonzaga Prep (Washington, D.C.), as well as Berkeley Prep, Tigers coach Richie Warren said.

Berkeley Prep is the only non-Jesuit school in the tournament. Warren said one other local school was needed in case of inclement weather; in that event, games could take place at two fields to get the tournament back on schedule.

Warren said the two teams from New York will use wood bats after the New York City council this year approved a ban on metal bats in prep baseball games. The other schools would continue to use metal bats.

ASHWOOD COMMITS: Hillsborough High senior defensive back Andreas Ashwood has committed to Toledo, according to his father and Hillsborough assistant Alonzo Ashwood.

Ashwood, listed at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, was named to the Western Conference's first-team defense.
