2 Players Make Their Mark

Published: December 14, 2007

Two of Pasco County's premier players reached scoring milestones this week, and both came during wins for their respective teams.

Pasco's Demetrious Larry reached the 1,000-point mark in the Pirates' 64-57 win over Nature Coast on Dec. 7.

He became the third Pirate in the last eight seasons to reach the mark, along with Deran Burns and Darrell Davis.

Larry is averaging 20 points per game, and teammate T.J. Bryant is averaging 19.4 for the 5-2 Pirates.

Hudson's Jarrod Branco set the Cobras' single-game scoring mark in their 71-63 win over Zephyrhills on Dec. 6.

Branco had 40 points against Zephyrhills, shooting 75 percent from the field and 100 percent from the line 13-for-13.

Branco, a junior, had 34 points against River Ridge on Nov. 21. That was his highest this season before the Zephyrhills game.

He also leads the county in steals with 40 in eight games.

GATORS/BULLS MAKEUP GAME: The game between Land O' Lakes and Wiregrass Ranch that was suspended last Friday because of a broken backboard will be resumed at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

There was 3:53 left in the third quarter with Land O' Lakes leading 53-33 when Gator Jerome Harrison dislodged the rim, causing the game to stop.

The backboard was fixed in time for the Land O' Lakes girls to host Ridgewood on Tuesday.

RAMS UP IN AIR: As of Thursday afternoon, Ridgewood still didn't know whether it had a game to play at Ocala Trinity Catholic's shootout today.

The Rams were scheduled to play Gainesville Eastside, but Eastside pulled out of the shootout and the organizers were having trouble finding a replacement.

Coach Gary Anders said he was discussing the possibility of having Oldsmar Christian go up as the replacement but the coach at Oldsmar was unsure if he wanted his team to drive to Ocala to play a local team when it had to host Monteverde Academy on Thursday night.

If the Rams get a replacement game, it will likely be at 8:30 tonight. If they don't get a game to play today, Ridgewood will focus on conditioning until its game against Clearwater on Dec. 21.

GAME TO WATCH: Land O' Lakes has established itself as one of the best teams in Pasco County, right up there with Ridgewood after only losing by a point to the Rams on Tuesday.

But River Ridge could be a dangerous opponent for the Gators. The Royal Knights are 3-5 but only lost by nine to the Gators in their first meeting on Nov. 27 at Land O' Lakes. The two meet again at 7:30 tonight at River Ridge.
