LACOOCHEE - A man who spent more than a decade in a Florida prison for a fatal stabbing with a 6-inch filet knife is now accused of kidnapping and trying to strangle his former girlfriend.
Domingo Zamora Jr., 39, was held without bail at the Land O' Lakes Jail on Thursday on charges of felony battery and two counts each of aggravated assault and kidnapping.
At 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Zamora went to Angela Roberts' home at 39225 Coit Road and, deputies say, spat in her face, punched her in the eye and forced her and her 67-year-old mother at gunpoint into his Lincoln Town Car.
As they drove, Zamora screamed at Roberts, 23, and at some point began choking her, sheriff's office reports say. She struggled to breathe until finally he stopped.
Faye Palmer, Roberts' mother, reportedly told deputies she tried to reason with Zamora but he wouldn't listen.
When they arrived near his home at 37240 Tait Ave. in Dade City, he ordered Palmer out of the car but she refused to leave her daughter, a report states. Zamora fired a bullet into the floorboard between Roberts' legs and said he would kill them both, they told deputies.
Palmer stepped out of the car, had trouble breathing and collapsed. Roberts gave her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until paramedics arrived. Palmer was treated at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills and released.
Roberts later told deputies she was afraid she would lose her mother because of her ex-boyfriend. Neither woman could be reached to talk about the case on Thursday.
After the two were out of the car, Zamora drove away and was arrested later by Pasco deputies. He denied any involvement in the incident, according to a report.
Zamora was released from Polk Work Camp on March 29, 2005, after serving 12 years for second-degree murder.
He put a knife in the chest of fellow migrant worker Jose Alfredo Jimenez, 25, during a fight at Zamora's home, then on 14th Street in Dade City. An anonymous tip led deputies to a house where Zamora was hiding.
Zamora first did prison time in 1989 on burglary, grand theft and marijuana charges.
