Plant junior guard Sheldon Cooley leads the undefeated and No. 8 state-ranked boys basketball team in scoring at 23.6 points per game. As a sophomore, he was named the Tampa Boys Basketball Coaches Association Co-Player of the Year and was selected to The Tampa Tribune's All-Hillsborough County First-Team. He already has received numerous letters of interest from Division I schools, which include Central Florida and Marshall.
How have you improved since last season?
My jump shot has gotten better, my passing skills and controlling the offense.
Do you still get nervous before games?
No. I got used to playing on varsity since I was a freshman at Robinson.
You were listed at 6-foot-4 last year, but this year it says you're 6-2. Is that because you cut off your afro?
Yeah (laughs). I just wanted a different look.
Which do you prefer, college or NBA basketball?
College basketball. It's more fundamental and it's more exciting to watch. It's more of a real game. There's more of a challenge between the teams than in the NBA.
A lot has happened in the sports world this year, with Barry Bonds, Michael Vick and the New England Patriots dominating the NFL. What do you think was the biggest story this year?
Michael Vick with the dog fighting. It was a bad influence on kids. People looked up to him. I think it lowered his status with little kids because you don't see kids wearing his jersey anymore.
