DeKALB, Ill. - Jerry Kill is the new football coach at Northern Illinois, less than a week after he had Southern Illinois in the FCS semifinals.

Northern Illinois introduced Kill on Thursday as the successor to Joe Novak, who retired last month after 12 seasons as coach of the Huskies.

Kill was 56-32 in seven seasons at Southern Illinois, which plays in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly Division I-AA.

University of South Florida defensive line coach Dan McCarney, who was a head coach for 12 seasons at Iowa State before coming to USF, interviewed for the Northern Illinois job Wednesday.

USF: Palm Beach Central offensive and defensive lineman Danous Estenar (6-3, 341) verbally committed, Scout.com reported. Estenar reportedly chose South Florida over UCF.

HOUSTON: Oklahoma assistant coach Kevin Sumlin will be hired as Houston's football coach, the Houston Chronicle reported Thursday.

TENNESSEE: The Knoxville News Sentinel reported that Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe has been offered the head coaching job at Duke. The newspaper quoted sources in the Tennessee football program as saying he is expected to accept the post.

WALTER PAYTON AWARD: Georgia Southern quarterback Jayson Foster won the Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision.
