Fund Still Collects For Movie Workers

Published: December 15, 2007

I own a Screen Stars Stamp Album (measuring 10 by 12 inches). It has 40 pages with stamps of movie actors from the early 1940s.

It is marked "Harlick Mfg., Chicago." I would like to know its value.

Midlothian, Va.

Movie trading-card collector and expert Troy Kirk says the Motion Picture Relief Fund issued it. The album features a blue and gold cover with spaces for 474 stamps.

It is not known how the albums were retailed.

Harlick Manufacturing specialized in lithographed paper premiums and sales stimulators. I discovered that the firm also made trading cards, punchboards and other types of ephemera. The company is no longer in business.

I found that prices vary widely. Obviously, complete albums in excellent condition are at the top end, selling for about $200. Ones that are in lesser condition or incomplete sell for $45 to more than $100.

The fund is still in existence. Now called the Motion Picture and Television Relief Fund, it was founded in 1921 by several famous actors to help film industry workers' health and human service needs.

We inherited our hall tree from my wife's grandmother. It is made of oak or pecan and has a beveled mirror with a seat that lifts for storage. It is all original and in good condition. What is it worth?

This oak hall tree is American manufactured furniture, made around the turn of the 20th century. These pieces were extremely popular because they were so useful. They ranged from simple to grandiose.

This one would retail for $850.

Because the furniture is still popular, buyers interested in hall trees will find crazed sellers asking high prices on the Internet, but keep your money in your pocket until you find a reasonable price.
