Five Berkeley Prep players and Maureen Colligan of Academy of the Holy Names were selected to the Florida Sports Writers Association Class 3A All-State Volleyball Team on Friday.
Berkeley Prep sophomore middle hitter Lindsay Young was selected to the first team after leading the Buccaneers to the 3A state final four. Young, also selected to The Tampa Tribune All-Hillsborough County first team, ended the season with 294 kills, 208 digs and 83 blocks. Heading into the state tournament, she was named the MaxPreps/American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Week for the state of Florida.
Colligan, a senior outside hitter who has committed to Colgate University, was selected to the second team along with Berkeley Prep junior libero Christina Theofilos. Colligan led Holy Names to the 3A region semifinals and ended the season with 314 kills, 161 digs and 38 blocks. Theofilos led Hillsborough County in digs with 593. Both players were selected to the Tribune's All-County first team.
Berkeley Prep sophomore setter Becca Howard, a Tribune second-team selection, was named to the third team. Berkeley's sophomore outside hitters, Chelsea Parker and Alex Dickerson, were honorable-mention selections.
The 5A and 6A All-State teams are scheduled to be announced today.
SOFTBALL: Hudson C Danielle Fennimore signed a letter-of-intent to play at Warner Southern College in Lake Wales. Fennimore hit .508 last season with 14 doubles, seven triples and two home runs. As a sophomore, Fennimore led Pasco County with a .574 batting average.
In June, she was invited to participate in the Louisville Slugger Independence Day Softball All-Star Game in Boulder, Colo. Last season, she was named All-Sunshine Athletic Conference third team and Pasco Tribune All-County Softball team honorable mention.
TRACK AND FIELD: The Vernon Korhn Hillsborough County Track and Field Championships has a tentative date and location. The meet is scheduled for April 1 at Jefferson High.
As was the case last season, there will be qualifying meets at various locations around the county, where the top individuals and relay teams, as well as at-large entries, advance to the county championship meet. Those cluster meets are slated for March 25.
Wharton's girls and boys won the inaugural Vernon Korhn meet last season at Gaither.
