WESLEY CHAPEL - Crews renovating the intersection of County Line Road and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard could finish with the bulk of their work by the end of the month.
"We're pushing to be substantially complete by the end of the year," said Hardy Gillespie, project manager for apartment builder Spanos Corp.
The work is the leading edge of a wave of road construction that promises to snarl traffic on Bruce B. Downs, State Road 56 and other streets starting next year.
Spanos was required to improve the intersection to compensate for two of its projects: Arlington apartments at State Road 56 and Bruce B. Downs; and Bonterra, an apartment block planned for S.R. 56 just west of Arlington.
The improvements will also compensate for extra traffic generated by the expansion of Northwood Shopping Center, at the northwest corner of County Line and Bruce B. Downs, and the development of Northwood Village Center at Bruce B. Downs and S.R. 56, Gillespie said.
When finished, the project will provide drivers with two left-turn lanes from northbound Bruce B. Downs onto westbound County Line. And instead of traffic signals strung from wires across the intersection, the lights will be mounted on metal poles.
Crews are installing concrete medians to separate eastbound and westbound lanes on County Line.
Gillespie said crews should have the road surface ready for drivers by the end of December. Once the final layer of asphalt goes down it must cure for several weeks before crews can lay the final stripes and "cat's eye" lane markers, Gillespie said.
