ST. PETERSBURG - ST. PETERSBURG - A 4-year-old boy walked his 82-year-old grandmother to safety when he noticed her house at 3036 18th Ave. S. was on fire, St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue Lt. Rick Feinberg said.
A fire broke out in the rear of the house at 4 p.m., Feinberg said.
Maggie Jordon, 82, was babysitting her grandson, O'Amor Flowers, when he went to the bathroom and noticed smoke from a back room. The boy had been dropped off by his uncle who left.
The house was destroyed, and the American Red Cross is assisting the family.
Jordon lives with her 62-year-old son at the house. He was not in the house when the fire broke out.
Firefighters are still trying to put out the fire. After the fire is knocked down, investigators will look at what caused the blaze, Feinberg said.
A portable gas heater was being used, Feinberg said.
