TAMPA - With 37 days between the University of South Florida's regular-season finale at Pittsburgh and the Sun Bowl, the Bulls will be relatively healthy - for this time of year - when they face Oregon in El Paso, Texas, on Dec. 31.
USF also is looking good as far as not having any player academically ineligible to play in the bowl game.
"I don't think so," Bulls coach Jim Leavitt said when asked if any players were in danger academically. "Grades aren't going to be a factor at all."
ANOTHER AWARD: Sophomore DE George Selvie picked up another honor when he was named a first-team All-American by ESPN.com.
Selvie, a consensus first-team All-American, was named to every national list except The Sporting News. He leads the nation in tackles for loss (31.5) and is second in sacks (14.5).
IS THIS IOWA? With temperatures in the 40's, coaches and players alike did their best to protect themselves from the cold during Monday night's one-hour practice.
Defensive line coach Dan McCarney, who spent the previous 12 years as head coach of Iowa State, said the weather made it a perfect day to practice.
To which running backs coach Carl Franks said, "Yeah, in Iowa."
