CHARLES "CHIP" R. FLETCHER
38, partner at Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick LLP
Education: Bachelor's in environmental engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology; juris doctorate from Florida State University
How did you get here: Fletcher has always loved to go sailing, canoeing and fishing, so he decided to work toward an undergraduate degree in environmental engineering. He soon learned that regulatory structure is just as important as the science and engineering part of preserving the environment. After receiving his bachelor's degree, he spent the next couple of years working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington on regulatory problems. This is what prompted him to go to law school.
Business philosophy: "Always focus on providing value to your client in a way that is distinctive and highlights your special skills efficiently and in a cost-effective manner."
Surprise: Fletcher has been playing the upright bass since middle school. "I also teach Sunday school."
Favorite music: Blues, especially Joe Cocker
Mentor: Jim Bacchus, a lawyer whom he met in college. Bacchus is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives and a former chairman of the appellate body of the World Trade Organization. "Every person deserves a good lawyer to help them solve their problems," Bacchus says. "Sometimes good people get into bad situations and need help."
