PLANT CITY - John McCaughey, senior district secretary to state Rep. Rich Glorioso, R-Plant City, died today at South Florida Baptist Hospital. He was 67.
McCaughey, former dean of student services at Hillsborough Community College's Plant City campus, suffered a heart attack Friday.
"John was smart – a self-starter, a problem-solver, a listener," Glorioso said. "When people would call my office with any problem – from adoption to taxes – he knew the ropes and could handle any situation.
"You couldn't ask for a better person. He had a huge heart."
McCaughey joined Glorioso's team three years ago, after the former Plant City commissioner won his first term in the state house.
"Our office was John's world and he just let us come into his world occasionally," said Cori Cuttler, a legislative aide to Glorioso.
McCaughey is survived by his wife, Susan, a son, a daughter and two stepchildren.
Funeral arrangements are not yet available.
