TAMPA - Holiday procrastinators get ready: Today is expected to be the year's busiest day at the post office.
There weren't many people at the Tampa International Airport Post Office on Spruce Street at 7:45 a.m., but supervisors said that would change.
They expected the lines to start forming this afternoon.
One hundred temporary employees were hired to help with the seasonal deluge, Tom Parrish, a logistics and distribution specialist for the U.S. Postal Service, said in an interview with The Tampa Tribune this month.
This is expected to be the busiest day of the year for the Postal Service and FedEx, with Dec. 17 traditionally being peak crunch time for UPS.
The Postal Service anticipates handling about 1 billion cards, letters, catalogs, packages and magazines today. The average daily volume is about 703 million pieces.
