SEFFNER - The Hialeah Police Department is investigating an incident in which an off-duty Hialeah police officer allegedly displayed a handgun to Armwood fans after the Hawks' state semifinal game in Miami on Dec. 7.
Hialeah Police Department spokesman Frank Gonzalez on Monday confirmed there is an internal investigation being conducted regarding the incident, which occurred in the moments following Armwood's 34-14 loss to Miami Washington at Traz Powell Stadium.

Gonzalez said Hialeah police officials are planning to come to Seffner to take statements from witnesses regarding the incident. He would not name the officer in question nor provide any details of the incident, citing the ongoing investigation.

Armwood principal Marc Hutek, Armwood athletic director Don Hill and Hillsborough County director of athletics Lanness Robinson each confirmed to The Tampa Tribune the ongoing police investigation. All three individuals were at the game. Neither Hutek nor Robinson witnessed the incident firsthand, they said, while Hill would only confirm the police investigation before deferring all further questions to Hutek.

Hutek watched several Armwood fans "scatter" near the visiting stands in the moments following the game, he said. As he approached the scene, Hutek said he was told by witnesses that an individual had displayed a handgun. After witnesses pointed out the suspect, Hutek said he notified law enforcement officials on the scene, who were in the process of apprehending the suspect.

Robinson said the incident was extremely troubling.

"It's crazy. It's unbelievable that this happened. It's very shocking. It kind of makes your mouth drop," Robinson said.
Dairy Farmers Honor Murray, Callahan

Plant junior quarterback Aaron Murray and Armwood coach Sean Callahan were named the Class 4A Player and Coach of the Year by The Florida Dairy Farmers on Monday.

Murray, who took an official visit to the University of Florida over the weekend, ended the season with more than 4,000 passing yards with a state single-season record 51 touchdown passes. He also rushed for 932 yards for 12 touchdowns while leading the Panthers to the 4A region final. Former Plant quarterback Robert Marve won the award last year.

"I'm definitely honored to win this award and I don't think it's a coincidence that two years in a row it went to a Plant player because of the great people we're surrounded by," Murray said. "I'm surrounded by a bunch of guys, starting with Coach Robert Weiner, who make me look good."

"Aaron is an incredibly hard worker," Weiner said. "When you put the time in that he has and match that with his talent, you can achieve something like this."

Callahan guided the nationally ranked Hawks to the state semifinals and a 13-1 record.

"It is an unbelievable award considering the people who are up for the award year in and year out. It's very humbling," Callahan said.

Murray becomes a finalist for the 2007 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Football award, while Callahan is up for Coach of the Year.
