LAKELAND - Rumors about a shooting have persuaded Polk County school officials to close George Jenkins High School on Wednesday, Polk County Sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers said today. Additional security was provided today but no incidents were reported.
The school will be closed until Jan. 3, 2008, school officials said. All extracurricular activities and classes are cancelled starting Wednesday. The school system's scheduled winter break begins Thursday.
"There is a rumor going around that someone is going to show up at school and shoot somebody," Rodgers said.
Deputies are investigating.
The information is being communicated to Jenkins High School parents and staff through the school district's automated phone message system.
