LAKELAND - Rumors about a shooting have persuaded Polk County school officials to close George Jenkins High School today, Polk County sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers said Tuesday.
Additional security was provided Tuesday, but no incidents were reported.
"There is a rumor going around that someone is going to show up at school and shoot somebody," Rodgers said.
Deputies are investigating.
The school will be closed until Jan. 3, school officials said. All extracurricular activities and classes are canceled starting today. The school system's scheduled winter break begins Thursday.
The information was being communicated to Jenkins High School parents and staff through the school district's automated phone message system.
