TAMPA - County officials urged people to avoid any contact with Pebble Mound Creek near Memorial Highway and Bay Pointe Drive for the next several days after a pipe spewed 150,000 gallons of sewage into the waterway.
The broken 14-inch sewer pipe sent the sewage into the creek that eventually leads to Tampa Bay.
The break occurred in the 5800 block of Memorial Highway just east of Town 'N Country Boulevard.
A caller reported the leak about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday.
The leak does not affect any canals in the area.
Hillsborough County Water Resource Services notified local and state environmental agencies and will post warning signs. The county also will take water samples and monitor the area where the spill occurred.
The county shut down the line and is using tanker trucks to empty sewer lift stations that serve the area until repairs are finished.
