For a while, Jesuit goalkeeper Max Renaldo and his mates were perfect in district play - as in, didn't give up a goal. But one got away in the district finale against Robinson last week.
First off, talk about your interview with the Naval Academy last week?
My brother applied there, so I thought it would be a good thing to do myself. When I'm older I want to go into the FBI or intelligence, and I want to play soccer at a Division I school and it seems like I could do that there.
At one point Jesuit didn't allow a goal in 11 straight games, including every district contest entering the Robinson game on Dec. 11. Was it you or the defense in front of you?
It was both. The defense stepped up and played hard and I kept my composure. That got us through all those zeros.
Were you conscious of the fact that the team had not given up a goal in district play entering that Robinson game? Was it something you talked about?
We wanted to go scoreless for the whole district schedule and then see how much farther we could take it. But they Robinson scored on me.
Take me through the goal that ended the streak? What happened?
It was a mistake. They had a free kick. It was about 18 yards out. He curved it around the wall and I took my eye off the ball for a moment because I noticed a player coming out of the corner of my eye. The ball just rolled right through my legs.
How did your teammates take it?
I looked over at them and some of them had their mouths dropped. They couldn't believe it. I never thought that would happen.
