5 Questions With AHN's Katie Davis

Katie Davis, a 5-foot-7 junior guard at the Academy of the Holy Names, waited patiently for her chance to lead the Jaguars. Now that her time is here, she has not disappointed. Davis leads the team in scoring (21.5 points per game) and rebounds (8.8) and is second in assists (4.1) and steals (4.2).

You've taken over the reins of the team from Gianna and Catriana Messina, who have gone on to college. How does it feel to know your teammates look to you for leadership?

It feels good. The last few years I've played under some pretty good players, so it's nice to be able to show what I can do and prove that I can lead this team. It's gratifying to see all my hard work paid off.

How big was the twins' shadow?

It was really big. But it was good playing with them because I learned a lot from them. It made me work that much harder to improve my game and become more of an offensive threat.

How much of your time does basketball consume?

A lot. With going to school and then having two-hour practices every day, it's hard to balance everything sometimes. But it's doable. I've been going to the Southeast Basketball Academy since sixth grade to train and work on my shot and overall game. Summers are all basketball, with summer leagues and such. But it's all fun; I enjoy it.

As a team, what are you expecting the rest of the season?

We don't focus on how far we'll make it in the playoffs or anything like that. We just want to get better each game. And if we do that everything else should fall into place.

Other than playing in Holy Names' tournament Dec. 27-29, what else will you be doing on your Christmas break?

We have relatives coming down, so I'll get to spend some time with them. But it's still going to be all about basketball. Our coach Casey Higgins is giving us one day off - Christmas. So we'll be practicing every day just like normal.
