I found Rose, whose kindness to other players is so admirable, putting finishing touches on the club's Christmas tree.

South ruffed the second club, led a trump to dummy and ruffed a club. He took the ace of diamonds, led a trump to dummy and returned a diamond.

South was focused. He knew East had held one spade, one heart and seven clubs. Since East had four diamonds, South couldn't gain by finessing: Even if the jack won, he would lose a diamond at the end. As the only chance, South put up his king, hoping West had Q-3 doubleton.
