Merry Christmas, Now Get To Work

Published: December 21, 2007

After the U.S. House approved measures supporting the Hindu holidays and the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, felt Christianity was being overlooked.

So he sponsored a resolution to recognize "the international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith."

The measure passed 327-9 last week, but King blasted the nine "no" voters as un-American. "I would like to know how they could vote 'yes' on Islam, 'yes' on the Indian religions and 'no' on Christianity," he said. "The foundation of this nation and this culture is Christian. ... I think there's an assault on Christianity in America."

But wait. TV commentator Bill O'Reilly, who for three years has crusaded against "the war on Christmas," declared victory this year. As one example, he said one community is no longer calling them "holiday trees," but "Christmas trees" again.

Nevertheless, "recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith" is now part of the congressional record.

Perhaps now Congress can concentrate on important issues, like the war on terrorism, increasing border security and addressing the entitlement crisis, and quit wasting time on frivolous measures. That's all most Americans want for Christmas.
