Regarding "Desalination Plant OK'd To Join System" (Metro, Dec. 18):
Production of 25 million gallons of drinking water is a drop in the bucket for our regional demands. No red Christmas bow to celebrate the fact the desalination plant is online. The article touched on the justifiable criticism of this water plant's costly failures. Now Tampa area residents will face escalating drinking water costs and fouling effluent in their beloved estuary.
There's no public scrutiny because American Water privatizes this drinking water source and the Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Committee was recently stripped of their water monitoring staff. No longer is a data baseline documenting the effects of this desal effluent spilling into the bay around the clock. Who will be the replacement for Jerry Maxwell, general manager of Tampa Bay Water? Will conservation, repairing infrastructure and sensible governing of water resources be a priority of this new administrator?
The old marketing of desal as drought proof is nonsense.
