LAND O' LAKES - Christian Social Services of Lutz and Land O' Lakes has offered "hands of help and hope" to people in need since 1987.
Supported by 11 area churches, the agency's food pantry and thrift store serve central Pasco and northern Hillsborough counties.
"Food is the main crux of what we do," said Jacquie Petet, Christian Social Services' executive director. "We give 3 tons of food every month to people who need it."
The agency hands out bags full of staples - vegetables, fruits, soups, pasta, peanut butter and jelly, breads, and - if needed - baby formula. People also can receive necessities such as soap, diapers and feminine hygiene products. The agency's general guideline is that people can receive food three times a year.
People also can apply for help paying utility bills three times a year. Also, at the start of each school year, the agency provides new backpacks and school supplies for students.
Like most service agencies, Christian Social Services is especially busy this time of year. The agency plans to give Christmas food baskets to more than 200 families and will distribute toys to at least 400 children.
"I know from past years that, in many cases, these children wouldn't get a toy unless we provide it," Petet said.
More than joy, the agency sees a lot of relief when it's able to say "yes" to someone in need.
"A young mother came in today with her utility bill, and I told her we should sign up her kids for the toy distribution," Petet said. "She was floored. She said, 'Things have been so bad. I hadn't even thought about Christmas.'"
This year has seen an increase in requests for help.
"The face of need is changing," Petet said. "We get a cross-section of homeless people, single mothers, families and the elderly. Now we also see families from affluent subdivisions who have lost their jobs."
The agency draws on a cross-section of supporters, too. In addition to a core group of churches, school and social groups, scouting troops and individuals raise money for the agency. Christian Social Services also refers clients to other agencies when it cannot help.
In addition to money, the agency runs on community donations to its thrift store and pantry, both at 5514 Land O' Lakes Blvd. Christian Social Services has been in the big red building for eight years.
All that help allows Christian Social Services to keep helping.
"There is a silent cry for help in our community that we see when people walk through the doors," said store manager Tina Manning. "With a smile and a helping hand, we can give them some small comfort."
