Tampa Prep Takes Title At Holiday Classic

Published: December 23, 2007

SARASOTA - Tampa Prep battled its way through two tough opponents Saturday to win the Sarasota Holiday Classic tournament and remain undefeated at 17-0.

Chelsea Klotz scored twice for the Terrapins as they defeated Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons 3-0 in the final. Both teams matched up well with speed up top and strong defense, but near the midway point of the second half fatigue appeared to set in for the Chiefs and Tampa Prep took advantage.

Klotz gave the Terrapins the lead on a skipping shot past the Gibbons goalkeeper after outrunning defenders. Klotz set up fellow forward Paige Goodwin for the Terps' second goal, and Goodwin returned the favor as her pass to Klotz allowed the speedy senior to again outrun the defense to add a third.

Tampa Prep defeated Melbourne 1-0 to advance from its bracket in another defensive game. The lone goal came from Goodwin after a low corner from Carrie Field found the striker in front of the goal.

The Terrapins were the only team in the eight-team, two-day Elite division tournament to win all four of its games, doing so by allowing only one goal - in a 3-1 win against St. Petersburg Catholic.

The tournament provided Tampa Prep coach Pam Smith with something she desperately wanted - teams that matched up well with and challenged her team.

"We came here and played quality teams that play straight-up soccer," Smith said. "When you play that kind of soccer it's good for later in the season."

WRESTLING: Bloomingdale senior Austin Figari became the program's all-time leader for career wins Saturday after going 5-0 during a six-way dual tournament at East Bay.

Figari, who entered the tournament with 129 wins, one shy of Ryan Nye's record, got milestone win No. 131 against Spoto, Bulls coach Donny Peek said. Peek added Nye was in town and witnessed the feat.

Figari, a three-time state qualifier, now has 134 career wins.
