TAMPA - A police explorer experienced more than he bargained for during a ride a long with a Tampa police officer on Monday.
Both were hit over the head with a police baton during a struggle with a burglary suspect at 312 Floribraska Ave. at 1 p.m.
Drew Robert Robinson
Drew Robert Robinson, 18, of 1901 Jefferson St., is being held without bond and was charged with aggravated battery against a child and a police officer, among many other charges stemming from the fight. Robinson was already on probation.
Cpl. Danny Hernandez was flagged down about a burglary. The officer confronted the Robinson, who grabbed the officer's gun that eventually fell to the ground, according to a police report.
Then, Robinson grabbed the expandable baton and hit the officer four times in the back of the head. The police explorer tried to help and was hit in the forehead with the baton. The explorer program teaches teenagers and young adults about law enforcement.
After Hernandez disarmed him, Robinson bit the officer six times on his right shoulder causing him to bleed, the report states. Hernandez arrested Robinson.
Hernandez and the apprentice were taken to Tampa General Hospital. Hernandez was admitted but his injuries are not life threatening, police said. The apprentice was treated and released.
Robinson was charged with burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, armed burglary, two counts of battery, aggravated battery, aggravated battery on law enforcement officer, two counts of depriving officer of means of protection, obstruction or opposing an officer, grand theft of firearm, and felon in possession of a firearm.
