Here is the current status of the 100 players who comprised the previous five Best of the South teams from 2002-06:

2002

1. LB Ernie Sims, Tallahassee North Florida Christian
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: All-ACC performer – and high-impact hitter – during three seasons with the Seminoles. Taken in the first round (ninth overall pick) by the Detroit Lions in the 2006 NFL draft. Has 247 tackles in two NFL seasons.

2. WR Andre Caldwell, Jefferson
Signed With: Florida
The Update: Going into the Capital One Bowl, Caldwell, a senior, has 181 career receptions to set a Florida record. Previous mark was 172 by Carlos Alvarez (1969-71). Caldwell has 2,309 career receiving yards, which is fifth all-time on Florida's list.

3. DB Antonio Cromartie, Tallahassee Lincoln
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: Became first-team All-ACC DB in 2005, despite starting only one game. First-round draft choice (19th overall pick) of the San Diego Chargers in 2006. Named a Pro Bowl starter this season. Has 10 interceptions, setting a club record, and picked off Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning three times on Nov. 11. One more thing: Against Minnesota on Nov. 4, Cromartie had the longest play in NFL history, returning a missed field goal 109 yards for a touchdown.

4. RB Demetris Summers, Lexington, S.C.
Signed With: South Carolina
The Update: Coming out of high school, some recruiting analysts ranked Summers higher than Reggie Bush. Summers led South Carolina with 685 rushing yards in 2003 and was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. Rushed for 529 yards in 2004, but that spring, he was dismissed from the team by Coach Steve Spurrier, reportedly for violation of the school's drug policy. Signed as an undrafted free agent with the Dallas Cowboys in 2006, but was cut in training camp.

5. DB Reggie Nelson, Melbourne Palm Bay
Signed With: Florida
The Update: After spending one season at Coffeyville (Kan.) Junior College, Nelson joined the Gators in 2004. Became a first-team All-American in 2006 for the national champion Gators. Last spring, he was a first-round draft choice (21st overall pick) of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

6. OL Arron Sears, Russellville, Ala.
Signed With: Tennessee
The Update: Three-year starter at Tennessee. SEC All-Freshman Team in 2003. First-team All-SEC his final two seasons, and chosen as the league's top blocker as a senior. Second-round pick (35th overall pick) of the Bucs in 2007. Has started every game at guard for the NFC South champion Bucs.

7. RB Tyrone Moss, Pompano Beach Ely
Signed With: Miami
The Update: Largely haunted by injuries with the Hurricanes. After sharing time with Jarrett Payton and Frank Gore in his first two seasons, Moss was named first-team All-ACC in 2005, when he rushed for 701 yards and 12 touchdowns. Moss signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns in 2007, but was cut on May 8 following mini-camp.

8. QB Chris Leak, Charlotte (Independence), N.C.
Signed With: Florida
The Update: Four-year starter for the Gators. Became Florida's all-time leader in passing attempts (1,488), completions (895) and passing yards (11,213). Had 88 touchdown passes and 33 games with at least 200 yards passing. Gators were 35-12 during Leak's 47 consecutive starts, including a 41-14 victory against Ohio State in the BCS Championship Game. Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Bears. After release, now looking to play for Team Florida in the All-American Football League.

9. QB JaMarcus Russell, Mobile (Williamson), Ala.
Signed With: LSU
The Update: First-team All-SEC QB as a junior in 2006 and Most Valuable Player in the Sugar Bowl. Accounted for 6,704 yards of total offense in his career, when LSU was 25-4 with him as a starter. Taken by the Oakland Raiders with the first overall pick of the 2007 NFL draft, but was a contract holdout during the entire exhibition season and has struggled to gain a foothold during his rookie season.

10. WR Chad Jackson, Hoover, Ala.
Signed With: Florida
The Update: As a Florida junior, led the SEC in receiving with 88 catches for 900 yards and nine touchdowns. Semifinalist for the Biletnikofff Award. Drafted in the second round (36th overall pick) by the New England Patriots in 2006. Had 13 receptions for 152 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie. Injured during training camp in 2007 and not activated until Nov. 8.

11. WR Sean Bailey, Alpharetta (Milton), Ga.
Signed With: Georgia
The Update: Has 73 career receptions for 1,251 yards and seven touchdowns. This season, as a senior, Bailey has 37 receptions for 597 yards and four touchdowns.

12. DB Dee Webb, Jacksonville Ed White
Signed With: Florida
The Update: Two-year starter who was selected first-team All-SEC as a junior in 2005. Seventh-round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2006. Released by the Jaguars before this season.

13. WR Adarius Bowman, Chattanooga (Notre Dame), Tenn.
Signed With: North Carolina
The Update: Dismissed from the team at North Carolina during his sophomore season, reportedly for violating the school's drug policy. Transferred to Oklahoma State, where he had 60 receptions for 1,181 yards and 11 touchdowns. Bowman set a Big 12 record with 300 receiving yards against Kansas. Voted Big 12 newcomer of the year. This season as a senior, Bowman had 61 receptions for 932 yards and seven touchdowns.

14. DB Kenny Scott, Daytona Beach Seabreeze
Signed With: Georgia Tech
The Update: Started 36 games for the Yellow Jackets, developed into a stickout defender and played in the ACC Championship Game. Went undrafted in 2007, surprising many observers, but signed a free-agent contract with the Bucs, then was cut on May 22.

15. RB Tim Castille, Birmingham (Briarwood Christian), Ala.
Signed With: Alabama
The Update: In 2003, Castille became just the eighth true freshman to start an Alabama opener. Largely served as a short-yardage specialist for the Crimson Tide throughout his career. Led Alabama with five rushing touchdowns as a senior. Signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent.

16. QB Justin Midgett, Punta Gorda Charlotte
Signed With: Florida
The Update: In the same recruiting class with QB Chris Leak, so Midgett quickly saw the writing on the wall and transferred to Division I-AA Eastern Illinois. Ran into academic problems there and was suspended from team. Last season, he played quarterback for the Florida Firecats, an Arena Football team in Naples.

17. OL Aubrey McPhadden, Jacksonville First Coast
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: Didn't qualify academically coming out of high school and landed with East Mississippi Junior College in 2004. Didn't play in 2005. Signed with Ole Miss, but didn't qualify academically.

18. RB Kregg Lumpkin, Stone Mountain (Stephenson), Ga.
Signed With: Georgia
The Update: Has twice undergone knee surgery with the Bulldogs. After his latest injury, which knocked him out in October, he hopes to return for the Sugar Bowl. Lumpkin has rushed for a career 1,656 yards and 15 touchdowns.

19. QB Robert Lane, Monroe (Neville), La.
Signed With: Ole Miss
The Update: Switched from quarterback to tight end in 2005, but never became a substantial factor in the Rebels' passing game. Best season was 2007, his senior year, when he had 19 receptions.

20. DB Quinton Culberson, Jackson (Provine) Miss.
Signed With: Mississippi State
The Update: Four-year starter at Mississippi State, first as a cornerback, then as a linebacker after adding bulk to his frame. In 2003, became the first true freshman to start for Mississippi State since 1986. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2007 with the St. Louis Rams and is still with the team.

2003

1. WR Xavier Carter, Melbourne Palm Bay
Signed With: LSU
The Update: Played two seasons of football at LSU, but now is a professional track and field athlete. On July 11, 2006 in Lausanne, Switzerland, Carter had what is now the third-fastest time ever (19.63) in the 200-meter run. Has his sights set on become a medalist at the 2008 Olympics.

2. QB Xavier Lee, Daytona Beach Seabreeze
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: Occasional starter for the Seminoles, but his good moments have been more than upset by disappointing moments. High point probably was this season when he replaced Drew Weatherford at quarterback and led FSU past Alabama 21-14. But on Oct. 29, Lee was suspended for two games due to a violation of team rules. Lee is not eligible to play in the Music City Bowl.

3. LB Keith Rivers, Lake Mary
Signed With: USC
The Update: Became one of the best linebackers in college football. Three-year starter. Named Associated Press first-team All-American. Two-time All-Pac-10 first-teamer. As a senior, he was a semifinalist for the Butkus Award and had 73 tackles.

4. OT Drew Miller, Sarasota Riverview
Signed With: Florida
The Update: Capital One Bowl will be his 27th consecutive start for the Gators. Named All-SEC honorable mention. Will participate in the East-West Shrine Game.

5. OL Leon Hart, Columbia (S.C.) Spring Valley
Signed With: Auburn
The Update: Hart, with the versatility to play guard or center, saw his 2007 season was cut short by a separated shoulder in September.

6. QB Brian Brohm, Louisville (Ky.) Trinity
Signed With: Louisville
The Update: Finished as the Big East Conference's all-time leading passer (10,824 yards). Most Valuable Player of the Orange Bowl, when the Cardinals defeated Wake Forest to finish 12-1 with a No. 6 national ranking. Should be a first-round selection in the 2008 NFL draft.

7. DL Demario Pressley, Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley
Signed With: North Carolina State
The Update: As a senior in 2007, named All-ACC honorable mention. Tied for second on the team for tackles by a defensive lineman. Had six tackles for a loss.

8. WR Early Doucet, St. Martinville (La.)
Signed With: LSU
The Update: LSU's go-to receiver with 50 catches and four touchdowns. Plagued by injuries in 2007.

9. LB Willie Williams, Miami Carol City
Signed With: Miami
The Update: Trouble has continued to followed him after an arrest-plagued high-school career. Left Miami and transferred to Louisville, where he was dismissed from the team in 2007.

10. QB Drew Weatherford, Land O' Lakes
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: On-again, off-again starting quarterback who led the Seminoles to the 2005 ACC title as a freshman. Music City Bowl will be his 33rd starting assignment at Florida State. Has 7,135 career passing yards (already third all-time at FSU, trailing Chris Weinke and Chris Rix) and 38 touchdown passes (10th all-time). Has nine career 300-yard passing games, including 326 in a road upset of No. 2-ranked Boston College on Nov. 3.

11. DL Demonte Bolden, Chattanooga (Tenn.) Tyner
Signed With: Tennessee
The Update: Starting defensive tackle who is academically ineligible to participate in the Outback Bowl.

12. RB Jamaal Edwards, Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: Rushed for 87 yards while serving as backup to Antone Smith in FSU's backfield.

13. RB Markus Manson, Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Hillcrest
Signed With: Florida
The Update: Shifted to the secondary and mostly served in a reserve role. Hampered by an ankle injury in 2007.

14. RB Bobby Washington, Miami Killian
Signed With: Miami
The Update: Almost immediately left Miami to enroll at North Carolina State, where he played two seasons. Then opted for transfer to Division I-AA Eastern Kentucky. Led the Colonels with 1,025 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns in 2007. Had 554 yards rushing as a junior.

15. RB Thomas Brown, Tucker (Ga.)
Signed With: Georgia
The Update: Has 2,573 career rushing yards, good for sixth all-time on Georgia's list. Made a remarkable recovery from a torn ACL in 2006. After suffering a broken collarbone at mid-season, allowing freshman Knowshon Moreno to emerge in Georgia's backfield, he returned with a 139-yard effort against Georgia Tech in the regular-season finale.

16. LB Rory Johnson, Vicksburg (Miss.)
Signed With: Mississippi State
The Update: Academics forced him to initially enroll at Hinds Community College, where he played two seasons. Then he opted to sign at Ole Miss, where he had 94 tackles in his only season before early entry into the 2007 NFL draft. He was not selected, but signed as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Green Bay Packers, who cut him before the regular season.

17. RB George Bell, Fayetteville (N.C.) Britt
Signed With: Virginia Tech
The Update: College career was short-circuited by ongoing knee injuries.

18. CB J.R. Bryant, Miami Killian
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: Lost his starting position and now serves as a reserve cornerback.

19. DB Kenny Ingram, Orlando Edgewater
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: Had five tackles this season in a reserve role in FSU's secondary.

20. OL Calvin Darity, Tallahassee Lincoln
Signed With: North Carolina
The Update: Suffered a broken foot in 2005, but has been a two-season starter at guard ever since.

2004

1. WR Fred Rouse, Tallahassee Lincoln
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: Dismissed from FSU's team after his freshman season for "conduct detrimental to the program.'' Landed at Texas-El Paso, where he had 25 receptions in 2007.

2. QB Ryan Perrilloux, Reserve (East St. John), La.
Signed With: LSU
The Update: Generally LSU's change-of-pace quarterback throughout the 2007 season, although he played the entire SEC Championship Game in place of the injured Matt Flynn. Rushed for 203 yards and completed 68 percent of his passes for eight touchdowns. Should be LSU's starter in 2008.

3. DB Kenny Phillips, Miami Carol City
Signed With: Miami
The Update: Phillips will skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft. Named first-team All-ACC as a third-year junior. Had 95 tackles, ranking second on the team, and two interceptions. Third-team All-American as a sophomore in 2006.

4. WR Derrick Williams, Greenbelt (Roosevelt), Md.
Signed With: Penn State
The Update: Led the Nittany Lions in 2007 with 50 receptions for 490 yards and three touchdowns. Also averaged 11.2 yards on punt returns.

5. RR Antone Smith, Pahokee
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: Former Mr. Football in Florida led the Seminoles with 663 rushing yards. Had a pair of 100-yard rushing games.

6. LB Tray Blackmon, LaGrange, Ga.
Signed With: Auburn
The Update: Had 41 tackles in eight games during 2007 season.

7. LB Spencer Adkins, Naples
Signed With: Miami
The Update: Had 36 tackles in 2007 to rank eighth on the team.

8. WR O.J. Murdock, Middleton
Signed With: South Carolina
The Update: Murdock's Gamecock career was short-lived. He was suspended following an arrest in Tampa. He landed at Pearl River Community College in Mississippi and probably will emerge back on someone's Division I-A football roster in 2008.

9. DB Avery Atkins, Daytona Beach Mainland
Signed With: Florida
The Update: A troubled life ended when Atkins, 20, was found dead last July 5 in his car in the garage of his aunt's home. Atkins had been released from his Florida scholarship in 2006 after a domestic battery charge against him. He briefly attended Bethune-Cookman, but re-enrolled at Florida, paying his own way, although that wasn't enough to restore his status.

10. DB Bryan Evans, Jacksonville Ed White
Signed With: Georgia
The Update: Largely a backup cornerback, but has six starts in two seasons.

11. RB Maurice Wells, Jacksonville Sandalwood
Signed With: Ohio State
The Update: Ohio State's second-leading rusher with 367 yards and three touchdowns.

12. DL Rahim Alem, New Orleans St. Augustine
Signed With: LSU
The Update: Had eight tackles and two sacks in a reserve role on a powerful LSU defensive line. Formerly known as Alfred Jones. Legally changed named to Rahim Alem in spring of 2006.

13. LB Geno Hayes, Madison County
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: Named first-team All-ACC. Had 72 tackles, second on the team, and 17.5 tackles for a loss. Career play was interception return for a touchdown against Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan. It sealed FSU's upset of the No. 2-ranked Eagles.

14. WR Patrick Turner, Madison (Goodpasture), Tenn.
Signed With: USC
The Update: As a junior, had 48 receptions for 569 yards and three touchdowns. USC's third-leading receiver. In three seasons, has 99 career receptions. Sophomore highlight was a 12-catch game against Washington.

15. OL Matt Hardrick, Orlando Edgewater
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: Played in eight games for FSU in 2006, but was released from his scholarship prior to last season.

16. RB Toney Baker, Jamestown (Ragsdale), N.C.
Signed With: North Carolina State
The Update: Suffered season-ending injury in opener against UCF. In 2006, was N.C. State's leading rusher with 688 yards, including a 174-yard effort against Clemson.

17. DB C.J. Byrd, North Augusta, S.C.
Signed With: Georgia
The Update: Georgia's starter at free safety. Had 43 tackles and one interception.

18. QB Jonathan Crompton, Waynesville (Tuscola), N.C.
Signed With: Tennessee
The Update: Serves as backup to Erik Ainge. Career highlight was 2006 game against LSU, when he had led an apparent comeback victory, only to have JaMarcus Russell upstage that with a comeback of his own in the final seconds.

19. TE Tommy Trott, Montgomery (Trinity Presbyterian), Ala.
Signed With: Auburn
The Update: Backup tight end in 2007. Had three receptions for 31 yards.

20. DB Derek Pegues, Batesville (South Panola), Miss.
Signed With: Mississippi State
The Update: First-team All-SEC as a junior in 2007. Had three interceptions and scored on a 75-yard punt return to key a comeback victory against Ole Miss.

2005

1. QB Tim Tebow, Ponte Vedra Beach Nease
Signed With: Florida
The Update: Won the 2007 Heisman Trophy as a sophomore. Became the only Division I-A quarterback in history with 20 rushing touchdowns and 20 passing touchdowns. Also named Associated Press player of the year in college football. Dynamic change-of-pace backup quarterback during Florida's national-championship season of 2006.

2. WR Percy Harvin, Virginia Beach (Landstown), Va.
Signed With: Florida
The Update: As a sophomore in 2007, named All-SEC first-team all-purpose player and was a Bilketnikoff Award semifinalist. In two seasons, he has rushed for 1,027 yards, shattering the UF career record for rushing yards by a receiver. Against Vanderbilt, Harvin had 223 yards on 20 touches, becoming the first player in school history with 100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving in one game. Had 1,380 total yards (781 receiving, 599 rushing), which is the third-highest total ever for an SEC receiver.

3. OL Carl Johnson, Durham (Southern), N.C.
Signed With: Florida
The Update: After a redshirt season, playing sparingly in 2007. Has worked mostly at center. Coaches like his potential.

4. OT Sam Young, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas
Signed With: Notre Dame
The Update: In 2006, Became the first freshman offensive lineman to start in a Notre Dame opener since freshman players regained their eligibility. Has started every game at right tackle in two seasons.

5. OL Andre Smith, Birmingham (Huffman), Ala.
Signed With: Alabama
The Update: First-team All-SEC left tackle became 19th Alabama player to win the Jacobs Trophy, presented annually to the league's top blocker.

6. QB Jarred Fayson
Signed With: Florida
The Update: Was switched to receiver in his first training camp. Playing time was hard to come by in two seasons. His highlight was a blocked punt against Arkansas, one of the key plays in the 2006 SEC Championship Game that set up Florida's national-championship run. After a largely frustrating sophomore season, Fayson announced a transfer to Illinois.

7. WR Vidal Hazelton, Chatham (Hargrave Military), Va.
Signed With: USC
The Update: Became a sophomore starter in 2007. Had 49 receptions, second-best for USC, for 535 yards and four touchdowns.

8. LB Micah Johnson, Fort Campbell, Ky.
Signed With: Kentucky
The Update: Has 54 tackles, fourth on the team, while playing middle linebacker.

9. OL Daron Rose, Jefferson
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: Started 11 games at left tackle. Will not make the trip to the Music City Bowl.

10. LB Brandon Spikes, Shelby (Crest), N.C.
Signed With: Florida
The Update: As a sophomore in 2007, named All-SEC first team by the Associated Press and SEC coaches. UF's leading tackler (118).

11. RB C.J. Spiller, Lake Butler (Union County)

The Update: Led Clemson in all-purpose yards (125.4 yards per game) and was named second-team All-ACC kick returner. In two seasons, has 1,594 career rushing yards, including 938 as a freshman.

12. LB Marcus Ball, Stone Mountain (Stephenson), Ga.
Signed With: Florida State
The Update: Served as backup strong-side linebacker in 2007. Had 24 tackles.

13. DB DeAndre McDaniel, Tallahassee Godby
Signed With: Clemson
The Update: All-ACC freshman selection by The Sporting News. Had 25 tackles and two interceptions.

14. RB Josh Adams, Cary, N.C.
Signed With: Wake Forest
The Update: Named to The Sporting News' national All-Freshman Team. Also selected as the ACC's Offensive Freshman of the Year. As a redshirt freshman, led Wake Forest with 887 yards and 11 touchdowns, finishing third in the overall ACC rushing race.

15. LB A.J. Jones, Middleton
Signed With: Florida
The Update: Named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. Ranked eighth in UF tackles with 33. Suffered broken leg in 2006, forcing a redshirt season.

16. DL Ricky Sapp, Bamberg (Bamberg-Ehrhardt), S.C.
Signed With: Clemson
The Update: Started 12 games as a sophomore in 2007. Registered 48 tackles and five sacks.

17. OL Clifton Geathers, Hemingway (Carvers Bay), S.C.
Signed With: South Carolina
The Update: Originally committed to Georgia, but switched to South Carolina. Attended Hargrave Military Academy for one season. Played 10 games and registered just two tackles in 2007.

The Update: Shifted to fullback. Fractured his right ankle against Alabama.

The Update: Cornerback with jet speed who was selected to 2007 SEC All-Freshman Team.

3. RB Joe McKnight, River Ridge (John Curtis), La.
Signed With: USC.
The Update: USC's third-leading rusher (415 yards). Many feel he will develop into a Reggie Bush-like talent.

4. RB Noel Devine, North Fort Myers.
Signed With: West Virginia.
The Update: Had 519 yards, led team with 8.6 average, and was startingly effective at times. But how will he be utilized by the new coaching staff?

5. WR Arrelious Benn, Washington (D.C.) Dunbar.
Signed With: Illinois.
The Update: Selected Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Had a team-leading 49 receptions for 596 yards and one touchdown. Also averaged 29.4 yards on kickoff returns, scoring on a 90-yarder.

6. QB Willy Korn, Duncan (James Byrnes), S.C.

The Update: Most view him as Clemson's QB of the future.

7. DB Major Wright, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas.

The Update: Selected to SEC All-Freshman Team. UF's leading freshman tackler (58). Had 11 tackles at LSU in his second career start.

8. QB John Brantley, Ocala Trinity Catholic.

The Update: Redshirt who is biding his time until Tim Tebow moves along.
