In 2007, commuters experienced some slow-going on local roads due to construction.
Work began on a new lane for Interstate 275 between Himes Avenue and the Hillsborough River.
The stretch of roads leading to and from the airport resembled a plate of spaghetti. A massive flyover bridge opened at the end of the year to funnel drivers from the airport to Kennedy Boulevard and I-275. Also new: an exit ramp to carry motorists to northbound Veterans Expressway.
In 2008, commuters will experience some slow-going on local roads due to construction.
Construction will continue on the south side of Interstate 275. Motorists will see pilings driven into the ground and paneled walls going up. The northbound exit to Ashley Drive will close this summer for about 100 days so the exit can be reconstructed. Drivers will be detoured to the nearby Scott Street exit.
The jumble of roads outside Tampa International Airport should start making sense. Work will continue throughout the year on a third ramp, to take drivers to State Road 60 and the Courtney Campbell Parkway. That one likely will not open until 2009.
A $20 million reconstruction of Gandy Boulevard in South Tampa will start in early January and last two years. When it's finished, the boulevard will get a 30-foot-wide, landscaped center median with left-turn lanes.
