TAMPA - Holiday travelers to Tampa International Airport encountered only a handful of delays Monday and mostly during the morning after winter storms blanketed parts of the Midwest and Northeast over the weekend.
Sunday was especially problematic with severe ice and wind forcing officials at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago to cancel more than 300 flights, including departures to Tampa. Delays were felt across the country, but conditions had eased by Monday.
Only one cancellation was reported at Tampa on Monday, a United flight from Washington. Several flights were delayed briefly, 5 to 15 minutes, and only a handful stretched to a half-hour or longer, spokeswoman Brenda Geoghagan said.
Kristen Eales of Wesley Chapel, sensing her stepmother's trip from Logan International Airport in Boston was among those delayed, called ahead and saved 45 minutes of waiting outside the gate.
"I knew this was coming. She told me that they had had a couple of feet of snow," Eales said.
Charlie Ply waited 40 minutes for his daughter, son-in-law and five grandchildren to arrive from Minneapolis, but didn't mind.
"I've been through much worse," he said. "I just take it with a grain of salt."
