BARTOW - A Polk County sheriff's deputy responding to a possible burglary struck a car that pulled in front of him shortly after 7:30 p.m. today.
Deputy Greg Wagner, a Polk detective, was sent to Bartow Regional Medical Center for back and chest pain. He is expected to recover. His sheriff's office-issued Chevrolet Impala, however, was totaled, according to sheriff's reports.
Wagner was headed south on U.S. 17 with lights and sirens activated, reports said. He was responding to a burglary in progress call in Lake Meade. A Pontiac Grand Prix crossing U.S. 17 on Bay Street pulled in front of him illegally, according to a sheriff's office report. Wagner's car struck the front passenger-side door of the Grand Prix. Wagner's airbags deployed.
The driver of the Grand Prix, Lakanya N. Jones, 29, was not wearing a seat belt, the report states. She was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Her passenger, Sanetrise V. Coleman, 29, was trapped inside the car and had to be extricated by emergency crews. She also was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for minor stomach injuries.
