Apart from ditching the "Devil" in 2007, the Tampa Bay Rays proposed building an open-air ballpark on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront.
The 34,000-seat stadium, which would feature a retractable, saillike canopy to protect fans from the sun and rain, is estimated to cost $450 million, and the Rays say they won't seek public money beyond $60 million in sales tax rebates that must be approved by the Legislature.
The proposed ballpark wouldn't open until 2012, but the coming year may determine whether the project moves ahead.
The Rays are counting on the sale of the Tropicana Field site for a hefty chunk of the funding, and St. Petersburg voters will take up a referendum in November that will determine whether a stadium can be constructed on the waterfront.
