From global warming to sucking the life out of our nonrenewable resources, we Earthlings have been working fast and furious to cripple our home planet. But, one by one, we're getting the message of salvation: If everybody makes an effort to save a gallon of gas, a gallon of water or an extra tree, we can come closer to conserving our riches and preserving the rock on which we all live.
Want to jump on the green bandwagon? Here are five ways to save from the Web site The Daily Green: The Consumer's Guide to the Green Revolution ( www.thedailygreen.com).
•Go back to a cord phone. Cordless phones eat power by sitting most of the day and night in their recharging cradles.
•Install a low-flow shower head. Americans use more than 1.2 trillion gallons of water in showers and tubs each year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. A low-flow shower head can cut consumption by more than half.
•Reuse copy paper. The United States consumes 4 million tons of copy paper each year. Reuse it by feeding it through the copy machine a second time. After all, you used only one side the first time.
•Turn up the thermostat on the fridge. You monitor the temperature in your house, so why not do the same with your refrigerator? There's a good chance it's wasting electricity by being too cold. Energy experts say your fridge should be no lower than 37 degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer no lower than 3 degrees.
•Eat lower down on the food chain. The animals people eat consume massive amounts of resources, such as crops, acreage and water, so why not use that land to feed people in a more direct way? They're called plants.
