Diana Bloom of Tampa was a newlywed when she lost 40 pounds through Weight Watchers International a decade ago. Now, the mother of preschool-aged twins teaches the strategies that helped her to others who want to shed body baggage.
•Set realistic goals. Aim to lose just 10 percent of your current weight. It's more realistic for a person weighing 230 pounds to drop 23 than 50 or 100 pounds.
•Move more. "When you're dieting, you're focusing on only one part of the equation," she says. Exercise can be as simple as walking while on the phone or parking farther away from a store.
•Don't deprive. "Diet" is a four-letter word at Weight Watchers because it overemphasizes the idea you have to be deprived of nutrition and flavor. Instead, choose the right foods with the right portions.
•Get help from friends. A support group - whether it is co-workers or participants at a formal weight-loss group - can help you stay focused.
•Forgive, but don't forget. Everyone stumbles from time to time. If you overeat at a meal or two, remember there are 19 more meals in a week to use to recover. "A lapse doesn't spoil your success," Bloom says.
