TAMPA - Bern's Steak House owner David Laxer announced Thursday that four in-house chefs will guide the restaurant and its progressive South Tampa companion eatery, SideBern's. The appointments come seven weeks after longtime executive chef Jeannie Pierola left the company.
Andy Minney, 36, and Habteab Hamde, 44, will share chef de cuisine, or head chef, duties for Bern's. Both previously were sous chefs, or second in command, at the restaurant.
Minney graduated from Johnson & Wales University in Charleston, S.C. Hamde, known as "Hab" at Bern's, emigrated from the northern East Africa country of Eritrea in 1983 and attended the Swedish Culinary Institute in Sudan.
SideBern's new executive chef is Chad Johnson. Courtney Orwig was elevated to chef de cuisine. Johnson, 28, is one of the youngest executive chefs in the area. He studied at the French Culinary Institute in New York and previously worked at Layla, Montrachet and Savory in Manhattan. Orwig, 35, started his career in pastry and was recruited by Pierola.
"We are confident that we have both the talent and vision within our culinary teams, and we are pleased to finally announce the promotions," Laxer said in a news release.
