NEW PORT RICHEY – A year after losing to Largo in the Ridgewood Winter Tournament final, Alonso returned and this time found little resistance en route to the championship.
The Ravens (13-2-3) and their up-tempo attack dominated Pinellas Park 4-1 Friday night at Ram Booster Stadium, and outscored their three tournament opponents 11-1. Julio Perez had a goal and an assist in the final, and five goals throughout the tournament to be named Offensive Most Valuable Player.
"We played much better here than we did last year," Ravens coach Ray DiPompo said. "The key was defense, and offensively, we spread it around."
Devin Perkins scored the lone goal for Pinellas Park (5-7-3), and was named Defensive MVP. Alonso will be competing in the Soccer Fields, Inc. Tournament (formerly the Admiral Cup) at Ed Radice Park next week.
Leto (8-6-1) defeated host Ridgewood 2-1 in overtime to take third place. Tommy Nomany scored the game winner. The Rams (7-10-3) came close to reaching the final the night before, playing two overtimes against Pinellas Park, but lost 4-1 on penalty kicks.
Newsome (6-8-1) beat Zephyrhills 4-0 in the fifth place game, led by three second-half goals from Jeff Schlandt. Bulldogs keeper Rafael Rodriguez had 12 saves. Inverness Citrus (9-7-3) won the consolation game 3-2 against Springstead.
