Delray Beach Church Robbed After Christmas Eve Mass

DELRAY BEACH - A thief stole a safe containing thousands of dollars collected from parishioners during Christmas Eve services at a church.

Authorities think the safe, containing up to $25,000, mostly in checks, was stolen from Emmanuel Catholic Church sometime between late Monday night and early Christmas morning.

The church held three services on Christmas Eve, collecting more money than any other day of the year, said the Rev. Timothy Sockol.

"We're discouraged and disappointed," Sockol said. "Who would do something like that? Someone who was desperate or someone who just didn't care."

No arrests have been made.

"It may get difficult to pay our bills as we get through our summer," Sockol said.
